Masks for the glazing and the national insignia of the Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero in 1:48 scale, and with them four metal barrels: two machine guns of 7.7 mm caliber and two wing cannons of twenty millimeters. For the Hasegawa kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mitsubishi A6M2 entered service at the start of the forties and surprised at once by what it achieved at a very low weight. The designers left out armor and self-sealing tanks and gained agility and range that no carrier opponent had at the time. Folding wingtips allowed it to fit into deck lifts. The long glazed shell of the cockpit is a blessing and a curse for a model at the same time, because there are many frames and each wants a sharp edge.
Metal is not glued onto plastic; metal is seated into plastic. On this subject the wing cannon is cut off exactly where it emerges from the leading edge, the remaining stub is drilled with a bit a tenth of a millimeter narrower than the shank of the tube, and the joint is finished with thin cyanoacrylate, which draws itself into the gap. The advantage is that the depth of insertion can be adjusted before it dries, whereas on a molded part the position is set by the mold and the projection cannot be changed.
The set does not replace a kit; it complements it. The core remains the masking film, and the metal parts are added to it. On the Japanese subject one more thing deserves attention: the light gray-green finish of the early machines has little contrast, so a finished model carries shape detail less readily than darkly camouflaged European aircraft. All the more does a sharp metal element with a sheen of its own stand out on it.
