About product

Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar-IV 1:48 - a detail set of the engine

A detail accessory, not a kit of an aircraft. The set contains a cast model of the British Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar radial engine in the IV version in 1:48 scale, from the manufacturer Armory. It will serve in a build with an open engine bay, in replacing a simplified engine from a plastic kit or as an exhibit of its own. The contents of the package and the number of parts are given on the packaging of the set.

The real subject

The Jaguar was a British air-cooled radial engine of the interwar era with fourteen cylinders arranged in two rows one behind the other. The IV version is a later form of the same range than the III version; before buying, therefore, go by which version your particular aircraft calls for. For a modeler the engine is interesting for its rich surface: the interleaving covers of the two rows of cylinders, the finning, the valve operating rods and the ring of exhaust stubs.

Building and painting tips

Before you set to work, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry thoroughly; a greasy film from the mold is the commonest reason paint later comes off castings. Cut the casting blocks off rather than breaking them, and run the cut with a margin away from the fine fins. Sand resin wet and with respiratory protection. Make the joints with super glue, ideally of a gel consistency, which gives time to position a part. A striking detail worth a few extra minutes is wiring the ignition: a fine copper wire run from the distributor ring to the individual cylinders changes the overall impression more than any paint. The engine then needs only a dark wash, picking the edges out with a dry brush and the stubs finished with rust and burnt steel.

Who the accessory is for

  • For builders of interwar British aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • For modelers who build with the engine cowling open
  • For those who want to practice wiring and detail work with metallic shades
  • It is not a kit of an aircraft

This is a detail accessory, not a complete model. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package.

FAQ

The IV version is a later form of the same range. Choose the version according to what your particular aircraft calls for.

It is not. It is a standalone model of the engine as a detail accessory for a build or as an exhibit.

With resin castings yes - super glue. Cement for plastic will not make a joint here.
