A set of masks for a 1:48 model of the late Messerschmitt Bf 109G-10. It masks the cockpit canopy from both faces and adds two sets of stencils for the national insignia, which can thus be sprayed instead of applying decals.

The pair of insignia stencils in the box is aimed at the part of the build that the overwhelming majority of modelers dispose of with a decal. A sprayed cross lies directly in the paint layer: it has no thickness of its own, no glossy edge, and on a matte late finish it looks a class more convincing than the best decal laid on a gloss intermediate coat. The whole ritual around silvering falls away too, with no polishing, no softener and no air bubbles under a film.
Who gets the benefit. Builders who do matte late Luftwaffe camouflage of 1945 and are bothered that a decal never quite settles on a rough surface. Also anyone who abrades and oversprays a model: a sprayed insignia takes a sanding sponge, a decal does not.
And when you do not need it. When you build quickly and leave the surface smooth and semi-gloss, a decal from the box will do the same job with nothing extra needed. You will see the difference mainly on the large areas of the fuselage and on the underside of the wing.
The procedure in brief. The light fill of the insignia is sprayed first, then the second layer of the stencil is laid on and the dark border sprayed in. The order cannot be reversed, and that is precisely why there are two sets in the box. The glazing is masked separately; pieces for both its outer and its inner face are enclosed as well.
What to watch out for. A stencil forgives little: no dust or grease from your fingers may get under the edge and the position of the insignia has to be measured out before it is applied, because a shift can no longer be put right. It pays to make a test on a piece of scrap plastic, mainly on account of the covering power of the light color.
