About product

TRD AE86 Sprinter Trueno N2, 1985 - 1:24 (Aoshima)

An injection-molded plastic car kit in 1:24 scale from the Japanese maker Aoshima. The model depicts the Toyota Sprinter Trueno of the AE86 generation in N2 racing specification with modifications by TRD, as it was in 1985. Aoshima releases several AE86 versions alongside one another, so when choosing it is necessary to tell them apart by the tuner and the model year in the name.

The real subject

The AE86 was the last generation of the Corolla and the Sprinter with rear-wheel drive, which made it a sought-after racing and fun car for a long time. The Sprinter Trueno is told from its sister Levin by its pop-up headlights. Under the hood worked a 1.6 liter four-cylinder with twin overhead camshafts, which took high revs and responded well to modification. TRD is the racing division of Toyota, and N2 is the Japanese racing category in which the cars ran with widened fenders, a stiff suspension and a stripped interior. It was precisely in this form that the AE86 became known outside Japan as well.

Building and painting tips

The body decides the overall impression: sand the parting lines away, spray over primer and let the finish cure properly before polishing. Racing schemes with large areas of color are done more easily by masking than by a decal across a whole side. The interior of a racing specification is bare compared with a production car, which makes the roll cage and the seats all the more visible, so it pays to shade them and to add belts made from tape. Paint the wheels and the tires separately, because matte black with a hint of dust looks more convincing than gloss. Glue the glazing last with glue for clear parts, as ordinary cement for plastic would fog it.

Who the model is for

  • Fans of Japanese rear-wheel-drive cars of the 1980s
  • Collectors of racing specifications and period modifications
  • Modelers building car models in 1:24 scale
  • Those who want to practice a gloss finish and a racing scheme

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The Trueno has pop-up headlights, the Levin fixed ones. Otherwise they are sister cars of the same AE86 generation.

A Japanese racing category in which the cars ran with widened fenders, a stiff suspension and a stripped interior.

Aoshima releases a range of versions of the same car. Tell them apart by the tuner and the model year in the name.

The build is straightforward; the demanding part is the gloss finish. If you want a result like a showroom car, count on sanding and polishing.
