The carrier-borne fighter with a variable-sweep wing served the US Navy for more than three decades and became, for a whole generation, the symbol of the air war over the sea. It came about in answer to the need to protect a carrier group at long range, and it was therefore given a powerful radar and long-range missiles. It is precisely its prominent, often brightly marked tail surface that made it a favorite subject for modelers, who can build a whole parade of color variants on a single type.
The seven variants cover five different squadrons. Among them are markings from the first combat cruise of 1973 and from the cruise four years later. Several choices capture the final deployment of the units, that is the moment when the machines were given ceremonial finishes, and one commemorates the eightieth anniversary of the founding of a squadron. There is also the strikingly named variant carrying the nickname of the Baghdad thief. Alongside the original version, markings for the later engine variant are included as well.
Decals hold best on a smooth gloss surface, so before applying them it pays to spray the model with a gloss clear coat. The piece is released in lukewarm water and carried into place with a brush or tweezers. On markings that cross riveted seams or panel lines, a softening solution applied in two light doses will help. Once dry, the whole model is closed with a matte varnish, which blends the edges of the film into the surface.
