A 1:48 sheet devoted to two B-17G bombers with a documented fate, one of which ended up over the Ore Mountains and the other in Italy after seventy-one combat missions.
Responsibility details are not available.
The third sheet of the series has gone for depth instead of numbers. It holds two particular Flying Fortresses of the G version, whose combat career and the way they ended are documented step by step. Both have a direct link to Czech territory, which makes the sheet an interesting choice for a builder at home.
The first machine served with the 349th Bomb Squadron of the 100th Group of the Eighth Air Force and carried a name of its own on the fuselage. On September 11, 1944 it flew its thirty-eighth and last mission to Ruhland in eastern Germany; on the way it was shot down together with other machines of the unit by heavily armed German fighters and the wreckage came down near Kovarska in the Ore Mountains. Of the nine-man crew six men died, the pilot among them.
The second machine of the sheet
It was precisely the Ostrava raid that cost the group nine machines and a hundred crewmen. The bomber was finally written off in Italy at the end of 1944 and broken up for spare parts. The decals are transferred with water; the surface has to be evened out beforehand with a gloss coat, so the film adheres without a silvered edge. The kit of the bomber is not in the package.
