An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Valom. The package holds plastic moldings including clear parts for the glazing, photo-etched parts and a decal sheet. It is a short-run model, that is a mold with a fine surface but sparing location features, and the reward is a subject that almost nobody else offers in this scale. This release is turned out as an early aircraft in the British registration G-AVCN, that is in the form from the beginnings of the Islander program.
The Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander is a British light twin-engine high-wing monoplane that first flew in 1965. It came about as a deliberately simple and cheap aircraft: fixed landing gear, piston engines, a boxy fuselage with a door at every row of seats and a sturdy structure that stands up to operation from short and unpaved surfaces. It is exactly this undemanding nature that made it one of the most successful European transport aircraft: it flies on island and regional routes and in air ambulance, police and observation service all over the world, and its production stretched over decades. The BN-2A version brought changes to the powerplant and to details of the airframe against the first production aircraft.
Valom builds its models in short runs, so count on more careful preparation of the parts and on the need to try everything dry, because the location features are sparing and joining the fuselage and the wing deserves both time and tape. Fit the interior and the photo-etched details before you close the fuselage; attach the photo-etch with cyanoacrylate glue rather than with cement for plastic. Mask the clear parts with tape or with liquid mask. Light civil schemes need a good primer and white laid on in thin coats, otherwise the structure beneath shows through. An intermediate gloss coat under the decals is practically obligatory, otherwise their outlines silver. Keep the weathering discreet, because an aircraft in service with a civil operator tends to be well maintained.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
