Photo-etched stowage boxes for the Cromwell in 1:48 scale from the Czech maker Hauler replace solid plastic castings with folded boxes that have thin walls and an interior.
Responsibility details are not available.
An accessory set of photo-etched parts, not a kit. It is cut for the Tamiya kit and replaces the stowage boxes for kit and tools. The difference from plastic is fundamental: a casting is a solid lump of material with a suggested lid, whereas a photo-etched box is folded from flat walls, so it has edges of scale thinness and can even be built with the lid part open. That is exactly what opens up the option of filling it with a small load.
British armored vehicles carried a number of sheet-metal boxes on the fenders and at the rear, for tools, spare parts and the crew's personal kit. On the Cromwell the boxes made up a prominent part of the silhouette, and their exact shape and placement differed according to the production batch and the unit.
Folded boxes are built step by step: first bend the walls in a bender or between two razor blades, then join the corners with a negligible drop of super glue applied with a pin. It helps to glue a piece of plastic profile inside as a filler; the box then holds its shape and does not collapse during handling. If you want the lid open, add a tarpaulin inside made of thin paper or kitchen foil. Degrease the surfaces before painting and apply a primer for metal; the boxes were often painted differently from the hull, so a slightly different shade is credible. At the end a wash in the corners and light wear on the edges are useful.
This is an accessory for building a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
