What made the Italian theater unusual was that squadrons belonging to different countries stood side by side on the same muddy airfield. On this sheet the British No. 112 Squadron meets the Australian units No. 3 and No. 450 and the South African No. 11 Squadron. All of them came under the joint command of the Desert Air Force, shared supplies and targets, and differed mainly in the accent on the radio. They spent 1944 attacking communications in the Apennines, sat out the last winter of the war on waterlogged strips in Romagna, and in April 1945 escorted the breakthrough into the Po Valley.
It pays to keep to the order of work: settle the large national insignia first and only then fit the code letters to them, otherwise the spacing will drift and the difference will show on the finished model. The medium scale is treacherous in this respect, because the parts are already small, yet the wing surface still offers enough room for an error of two millimeters to show. It therefore works well to mark the position dry with a water-soluble pencil first and simply wash the outline off with a damp brush once you are done.
