A decal sheet with dark wood grain for models in 1:48 scale. Wood is among the surfaces that are the hardest to paint: to look convincing it has to have an irregular drawing of growth rings and still stay fine in a small scale. A printed sheet shortens that work to cutting out and applying. The grain comes into its own on propellers, on wooden parts of the interior, on floors and on plywood-covered areas.
It is a wet transfer. Cut out only the piece you need at that moment, with a small overhang. The base under the transfer has to be clean, degreased and glossy; on a matte surface visible edges will stay under the film. Soak the cut piece in lukewarm water for a few seconds, let it rest until it starts to slide on the paper and move it into place. Adjust the position with a brush, not with your fingers. Blot the excess water with a soft cloth and on shaped areas use a decal softener so that the film is pressed into the engraving. Once dry, go over the area with varnish, which hides the edge of the film. The detailed procedure is given in the manufacturer's instructions.
It will be appreciated by modelers who can see wood on the finished model and do not want to paint the growth rings freehand. The dark tone suits richer timbers and areas that are meant to look older and more saturated.
