About product

A masking set for the national insignia of the Dornier Do 215B-4, 1:48 scale

This is neither a kit nor parts of the aircraft but a modeling accessory. The package contains pre-cut self-adhesive masks from MH models with which you spray the national insignia of German and Hungarian service onto a finished model of the Dornier Do 215B-4. The masks are stuck onto the painted surface, sprayed over with the color of the insignia and removed once it has dried.

The real subject

The Do 215 came about as an export development of the Do 17Z type, from which it differed mainly in its inverted V12 Daimler-Benz engines. The B-4 version served mainly for long-range reconnaissance and carried photographic equipment in the fuselage; a smaller number of machines were also operated by the Hungarian Air Force.

Why the insignia are sprayed

A sprayed insignia has no carrier film, so no step and no silvering on a matte finish appear. The insignia can then safely be worked into the weathering, rubbed lightly or partly covered by camouflage, which with a decal always means a risk. On the large areas of the fuselage and wing crosses in 1:48 scale the difference from a decal is visible at first glance.

Application procedure

The surface must be smooth and perfectly dry; a mask holds best on gloss varnish, under which paint does not run. Transfer the mask with tweezers, press it down through a soft cloth and seal the edges once more with a thin coat of the base color, which will run into any gap and close the edge. Only then spray the color of the insignia, and do so in several light coats. Take the mask off shortly after it has dried, pulling at a slight angle rather than straight upward.

Who the set is for

  • modelers of twin-engine bombers in 1:48 who do not want to deal with decals silvering
  • building German as well as Hungarian machines from one sheet
  • models finished in matte, where the insignia is to be part of the finish
  • more experienced builders who do not mind working with tweezers and an extra spraying step

The masks are cut for the ICM kit in 1:48 scale, so check before you buy that they match the model you are building. Paints, varnishes and decals are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is an accessory for a model, a sheet of masking templates for spraying the national insignia. The model of the aircraft itself has to be bought separately.

For the national insignia yes, and that is exactly what it is for. It does not cover the other markings, such as codes and lettering.

Stick the mask onto gloss, dried varnish, press it down well and first spray the edges with the base color. That seals the edge before you start spraying the color of the insignia.
