The Douglas SBD Dauntless was an American carrier-based dive bomber of the Second World War with a crew of two: the pilot sat in front and behind him the radio operator, who also worked the rear flexible gun. The recognition feature of the type is the perforated dive brakes on the trailing edge of the wing, which held the speed within limits during a dive attack and at the same time reduced buffeting. The SBD-5 configuration was among the most numerously built versions of the type.
These are photo-etched parts, that is, a metal fret from which the builder removes the individual elements and fits them onto the model. Metal sheet may be as thin as sheet metal would really be, whereas an injection-molded part has to have a noticeable thickness because of the mold. The difference shows precisely in the places where sheet is meant to behave like sheet: on small covers, loops, buckles, plates and on the edges of hinged doors. Which particular parts the package carries and where they belong on the model is given in the instructions included by the manufacturer.
Have a hard surface and a new blade ready; a blunt blade will bend the sheet rather than cut it. Cut through the tabs that hold the parts on the fret and level the remainder with a fine file; never break the parts out. Make a fold along the whole length of the edge in one movement, as the metal does not take repeated bending. Bond with cyanoacrylate glue applied in drops on the edge. Degrease the sheet before painting and use a primer, otherwise the finish will not hold.
