The pilot of today's fighter looks different from a predecessor of the 1950s. Over the flight suit there is a torso harness, on the thighs and the abdomen a g-suit, which inflates during a maneuver and stops the blood draining out of the head, and a helmet-mounted sight. The silhouette is therefore more broken up, and when painting it offers more opportunities to work with shades than the smooth flight suit of older figures.
The list of countries is unusually long for this figure: it suits the British, German, Spanish, Italian, Saudi and Austrian air forces. The explanation is simple, because the machine it belongs with came about as a joint European project and serves in the same form with several users at once. One figure thus covers several different machines in a display cabinet.
The numeral at the end of the name refers to the fact that the maker offers a pilot of this type in two forms. Anyone building a scene with a single aircraft will get by with one figure; anyone who wants to show a crew change or a conversation before take-off will reach for both, because two different poses side by side look more natural than the same one twice.
The flight suit is usually in a gray-green shade, the harness darker, while the helmet is light and smooth, so it forms the lightest point on the figure. It is precisely the contrast between the flat fabric and the glossy visor that makes the result convincing, and it is worth a little patience.
