Please check that the set matches your own particular kit — resin accessories are always cut for a given kit and the dimensions of the nose differ between manufacturers. The dimensions of the block match the forward fuselage of the Hobby Boss kit.
The AN/APG-71 was the radar of the late version of the carrier-borne fighter Grumman F-14. It was based on the technology used in large pulse-Doppler radars and replaced the older system of the earlier Tomcat versions; it brought digital signal processing and better target resolution. The antenna is housed in the forward fuselage under a hinged cover, which swings open to the side during maintenance and exposes the whole block of electronics — it is exactly this view that makes an open nose a rewarding display case detail.
First wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with detergent, so that the remains of mold release agent are removed — without that neither primer nor paint will hold. Do not snap the casting blocks off: cut them with a saw or a cutter and sand the surface back, ideally wet and with protection for your airways, because resin dust must not be breathed. It glues with super glue, as cement for plastic does not work on resin. Before gluing, try the part dry in the opening of the nose and adjust any overhang by sanding. The antenna looks best in metallic shades with a dark wash in the recesses, and the cabling and connectors can be suggested with a fine brush.
The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a resin casting. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
