An injection-molded plastic kit of the North American F-86E Sabre jet fighter in 1:48 scale from the Italian maker Italeri. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The Sabre was the first American production fighter with a swept wing and became a symbol of the start of the jet fighter era. It made its name above all in Korea, where it met an opponent of the same generation, and its performance and handling made it the benchmark of its time. The F-86E version differed from the earlier F-86A chiefly in its all-flying tailplane, that is, an arrangement in which the whole horizontal surface moves; this fundamentally improved handling at high speeds close to the speed of sound, where the older solution lost its effect. The armament consisted of a battery of heavy machine guns in the forward fuselage, and power came from a jet engine with an axial compressor. In its various versions the Sabre served with dozens of air forces around the world and was also built under license outside the United States.
Finish and fit the cockpit before you join the fuselage halves, because you will not reach it later. On an aircraft with a nose landing gear it pays to plan the nose weight in advance, otherwise the model will sit on its tail. A duct runs from the intake all the way to the engine, so sand its inner joint and spray it a light color before the fuselage is closed. The Sabre is most often built in natural metal, which is the most demanding part of the work: the surface has to be perfectly smooth and glossy, the metal shades are applied in thin coats and the individual panels are shaded slightly, so that the surface does not look uniform. Use gloss varnish before the decals, seal them once they are dry and unify the whole with a semi-matte or gloss varnish according to the machine you have chosen.
