About product

Photo-etched set for the Tiger II with the production turret – 1:48, Aber

A photo-etched detail set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:48 scale intended for the German Pz.Kpfw. VI Ausf. B heavy tank, known as the Tiger II, in the version with the production turret. It is not a model of the vehicle but an accessory to a plastic kit, which you must own separately. The metal parts replace thin-walled fittings of the external gear and give a model the fineness that injection-molded plastic cannot offer.

The real subject

The Tiger II was the heaviest German tank built in series in the Second World War, armed with a long 88 mm gun and protected by steeply sloped frontal armor. The first examples were given a rounded turret with a markedly curved front face, which however formed a dangerous shot trap – a deflected round was directed into the hull roof. The production turret removed the problem: it was given a flat front face, less sloped sides and a cleaner shape with no bulge for the commander's cupola. The great majority of the vehicles built carried this later turret.

Building and painting tips

Separate the parts with a scalpel on a hard mat and run the bends in a photo-etch bending tool along the scored lines. Glue them with cyanoacrylate glue in the smallest possible amount. On the Tiger II it is worth paying attention to the surface finish as well – most vehicles carried the Zimmerit coating against magnetic mines, which is applied to the etched parts only once they are in place. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer for metal, and only then the three-tone camouflage scheme, a wash into the gaps and dusty pigments.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Tiger II in 1:48 scale
  • Anyone interested in the version with the production turret
  • Builders bothered by the thickness of plastic thin-walled parts
  • Advanced modelers with experience of photo-etched parts

This is a detail accessory, not a standalone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
