About product

A photo-etched set for the radio compartment of the He-111Z Zwilling 1:48 (Eduard)

On larger aircraft the radio compartment is one of the places you can see into once the build is finished, but where a kit usually offers only a coarsely suggested shape. This photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard deals with exactly that section. It belongs to the full photo-etched range, that is to the more detailed branch of the line. For comparison: Zoom sets contain only a narrowed selection of the most visible cockpit parts, masks serve to mask the glazing and the wheels, and combined sets bring several partial sets together in one package. A full photo-etched set goes into greater detail and assumes that the modeler will open part of the interior or at least leave the clear parts unsealed.

The real subject

The He 111Z Zwilling, that is twin, came about by joining two He 111 airframes with a new center wing section carrying a fifth engine. The result was a five-engine machine with two fuselages, intended above all as a tug for heavy transport gliders. Only a few were built and their service remained limited. It is precisely the unusual configuration that makes the type a rewarding subject for modelers, because it catches the eye on a shelf at once.

Usage tips

With interior photo-etched parts it holds true that it pays to try the assembly dry before gluing. A photo-etched panel often calls for sanding away part of the plastic relief beneath it, otherwise the result stands too high and the fuselage will not close. Separate the parts with a scalpel and make small folds with tweezers against a steel ruler. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in drops from a wire offcut. If the set contains color-printed parts, no primer or paint goes on those; they are only protected with a matte clear coat once dry. Before closing the fuselage, carefully accent the interior with a dark wash and a dry brush.

Who the set is for

  • modelers building the He 111Z in 1:48 scale who want an open or viewable interior
  • those who prefer the full range of photo-etched parts to a narrowed Zoom set
  • more experienced builders used to working with tweezers and cyanoacrylate glue
  • competition modelers, where even what is seen only through a window counts

The set is an accessory for a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a photo-etched set for detailing a plastic kit, which you have to obtain separately.

Because it focuses on exactly that section of the interior, not on the whole model.

The German word for a twin. The aircraft came about by joining two He 111 airframes with a new center wing section carrying a fifth engine.

It depends on how you close the model up. It shows best with open hatches and when looking through the windows.
