About product

Hunting Percival Provost T.51/53 in 1:48 scale

Injection-molded plastic kit of the British basic trainer in the export versions T.51 and T.53, in 1:48 scale from Mikromir. The exact contents of the package, the number of parts, the presence of resin or photo-etched extras and the color schemes offered are stated on the box and in the kit instructions. For trainers 1:48 scale is a rewarding choice, because even a smaller aircraft comes out at a reasonable size and the detail of the cockpit stays visible.

The real subject

The Provost was a British basic trainer of the 1950s. In training it replaced older biplanes and brought an all-metal structure, fixed landing gear with a tail wheel, an Alvis Leonides radial engine and a cockpit with side-by-side seats for the student and the instructor under a long glazing. The side-by-side arrangement made it easier for the instructor to keep an eye on the student and to pass on instructions. The versions designated T.51 and T.53 were export variants delivered to foreign operators; compared with the machines of the Royal Air Force they also allowed for light underwing armament, so they served for advanced as well as weapons training.

Building and painting tips

Dry-fit the parts first and sand the mating surfaces to shape, and only then glue; with short-run kits this is usually the key step toward a trouble-free joint. The dominant feature of the model is the extensive cockpit glazing. The frames are best handled with narrow strips of masking tape or with a ready-made mask, and glue the glazing itself with a cement for clear parts that does not fog the surface. The radial engine deserves some emphasis: a dark wash between the cylinder fins and fine drybrushing on the edges will give it depth. Before the decals, coat the area with gloss clear coat, and once it has dried unify the surface with a matte one so that the edge of the film disappears.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of British training aircraft of the postwar period
  • Modelers who build aircraft with radial engines and fixed landing gear
  • Anyone interested in less common export variants and exotic color schemes
  • Builders with experience in dry-fitting parts to shape

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

They were export variants delivered to foreign operators, adapted among other things to carry light underwing armament.

With smaller manufacturers such extras are often part of the package. The contents listed on the box and in the kit instructions will tell you for certain.

The basic shapes are simple, but we recommend some experience with dry-fitting parts and with masking glazing. For a very first model it is not the easiest choice.

A base in a darker metallic shade, then a dark wash between the cylinder fins and light drybrushing on the edges. The engine is painted before the cowling is closed.
