1:48 JAS-39C Gripen decals (Bilek)

The set is a sheet of wet decals in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Bilek. It holds no plastic or photo-etched parts — it is purely markings, with which you add to or replace the decals from your own box. The particular schemes, their number and the extent of the lettering are stated on the box and in the instructions for the set. Before building, lay the sheet against the parts of the model and check the position of the markings.

The real subject

The JAS-39C Gripen is a single-engine multirole combat aircraft of Swedish design with a delta wing and a canard configuration. The JAS designation sums up three roles — fighter, attack and reconnaissance — which the machine performs without conversion. The C version is the export and internationally compatible variant of the single-seat version, equipped among other things for air-to-air refueling. It is operated by several European users including the Czech Republic, so this type is among the frequent subjects for modelers interested in contemporary equipment.

Applying the decals

Modern aircraft have a great deal of fine lettering and a surface with little relief, so careful preparation pays off. Varnish the surfaces with a gloss clear coat compatible with the paint used, soak the decal briefly in warm water and move it across with a soft brush. Draw the water off and use a decal softener at the transitions and the engraved lines. Apply the small lettering one piece at a time and let it dry before you put on the next. Finally, unify the model with a matte or semi-gloss varnish, depending on the look you want.
