Decals for the Japanese Ki-61 fighter in the variant with a lengthened nose, three machines of the 244th Air Regiment.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Kawasaki Ki-61 was an exception among Japanese fighters. While its contemporaries were powered by radial engines, this machine was given a liquid-cooled inverted V12 derived from a German design, and thanks to its slender nose it differed from the other Japanese types at first glance. Allied observers at first confused it with an Italian aircraft and therefore gave it a reporting name that had nothing to do with Japan.
This sheet covers the late variant, on which the nose was lengthened because the 20 mm cannons were moved into the fuselage. Three machines of the 244th Air Regiment are printed:
Two forms of one aircraft a few weeks apart are a valuable thing for a modeler. They show how quickly, toward the end of the war, the markings of units deployed in the defense of the home islands against raids by heavy bombers were changing.
The documentation for the sheet gives the name of the regiment commander for the middle subject, and that is guidance for the choice of accessories as well. Commanders' aircraft tended to have their finish better maintained and are among the best documented machines of the close of the war, so more sources can be compared for them than usual.
A practical note: the white quick-recognition stripes on the fuselage and the leading edges are solid areas and will show through without an underlying layer. Applying them onto a light base, or spraying white beforehand, will do the result good.
