Injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese fighter Kawasaki Ki-61-I Hien (Allied code name Tony) in 1:48 scale from Hasegawa. The boxing carries the markings of the 244th Sentai from the end of the war. The tooling dates from the 1990s, yet it is a well-buildable and popular model with an engraved surface, a glazed canopy and a decal sheet.
The Ki-61 Hien was the only Japanese production fighter with a liquid-cooled inverted V12 engine, a license-built derivative of the German Daimler-Benz. Its slim nose gave it a European look, which led the Allies to believe it was an Italian type, and hence the code name Tony. The 244th Sentai defended the Japanese home islands against air raids; among its best-known commanders was Major Kobayashi.
With the older tooling, check how the fuselage and wing halves meet and fill and sand the seams if needed. Glue the plastic with liquid cement. Finish the cockpit before closing up the fuselage and protect the glazing with a mask. Apply a primer before painting; the bare metal surfaces of some Hien machines are worth bringing out with metal shades and gentle panel toning with an airbrush.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
