A set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks for a model of the F-104S in 1:48 scale from the Czech manufacturer Eduard. The masks are stuck onto the transparent parts, the color of the framing is sprayed over them, and once peeled off the edge is left sharp and straight. On the Starfighter that is especially useful: the narrow cockpit canopy has long, slender frames on which any unevenness shows immediately. Eduard keeps this kind of set under the bare name of the subject, which is a usual convention in its coded ranges; these are masks, not a kit. The set is cut for a particular kit, so check before buying that it matches the model you are building.
The F-104S was the most extensively produced late version of the Starfighter, that is the single-engine supersonic aircraft with an extremely thin trapezoidal wing of very small span and with high-set horizontal tail surfaces. Compared with the original versions it received a more capable radar and the ability to carry medium-range guided missiles, so it could also perform the duties of an interceptor in poorer conditions. It was built under license in Italy and served above all with the Aeronautica Militare and the Turkish Air Force, where it stayed in active service unusually long. The type is popular among modelers thanks to its clean lines and its varied national and unit markings.
Wash the transparent parts first and let them dry — grease from fingers is the most common reason a mask does not hold. Lift the mask off with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel, lay it on and press it down with a soft wooden stick all around. First spray the shade that is to be seen on the frames from inside, and only then the outer color. Spray in thin layers; a heavy layer tends to bleed under the edge. Remove the mask while the paint is still fresh.
This is a masking set, not a model of the aircraft. The kit and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
