The basic level of a masking set in kabuki paper for building a model of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning in the H version, 1:48 scale. The stencils are pre-cut to shape, so it is enough to pop them out of the sheet and stick them on. It is not a decal or a kit; the masks are removed from the model once it is painted.
The P-38 has an unusual design with two tail booms and a central nacelle in which the pilot sits. The glazing is therefore divided into several smaller units with markedly curved surfaces and with frames that do not follow a simple straight line. Cutting tape by hand to such shapes is slow and rarely comes out symmetrically on both sides. Pre-cut stencils remove this problem, because both sides are cut from the same pattern. Kabuki paper moreover lets itself be pressed into a curve without wrinkling.
Mask curved surfaces from the bottom upward and stretch the paper gently as you lay it down, so that it follows the curve. If a small wrinkle nevertheless forms somewhere, lift the mask and lay it down again; do not try to smooth it out by force. Press the edges down with a wooden point; a metal tool could scratch the clear part. Before painting, check against the light that no uncovered strip is showing through anywhere. Apply the paint perpendicular to the edge of the mask, not at an angle under it. Once painted, take the masks off as soon as possible while the paint is fresh, and wipe off any adhesive residue with a cotton bud moistened in water.
