The most complete variant of the 1:48 mask series for a model of the single-seat Chinese J-11B fighter. The self-adhesive masks are cut to shape according to one specific kit, the Hobby Boss 81715. It is not a model but an accessory that comes into play at the painting stage.

Scope and repeatability

Within the series the EXPERT level is the most extensive one. Its main benefit is not just the number of masks but the repeatability of the result. Every edge is produced by the same technique and has the same quality, so the model looks consistent. When part of it is masked with a machine-cut mask and part by hand with tape, the difference is usually visible on the finished model.

The real subject

The J-11B is a Chinese single-seat fighter derived from the Su-27 design line, with domestic avionics and equipment added. It is operated by the People's Liberation Army Air Force.

A procedure that has proved itself

• First lay the masks out on the bench according to where they belong.
• Degrease the glazing and get the dust off the other surfaces.
• Work one mask at a time and press each one down right away so the edge does not lift.
• Spray thinly and rather in two passes; a heavy coat leaves a step along the edge.
• Peel while the paint is only touch-dry; once it has hardened, score the edge first.
