At the Czech manufacturer Eduard, Big Ed is the designation for a combined package in which several accessory sets for one particular model are brought together in a single box. This item in 1:48 scale concerns the American version of the Harrier designated AV-8A, and specifically its early form. It is not a kit of the aircraft — the model has to be obtained separately. It brings together in one package several sets that are also sold separately.
AV-8A is the American service designation of the single-seat combat aircraft with vertical and short takeoff, derived from the first-generation British Harrier. The power came from a turbofan engine with thrust vectoring, whose four rotating nozzles allowed vertical takeoff, vertical landing and so-called short takeoffs with a combat load. The machine served with the United States Marine Corps from the beginning of the 1970s, and operating it called for specific pilot training. Early and later machines differed in details of equipment, which is reflected in the division of the accessory sets as well.
Photo-etched parts are bent in a bending tool or between two razor blades; never bend them with your fingers. Degrease them before gluing and coat them with a base color, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth metal. A small amount of cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin suits the bonding, and for larger areas an adhesive for clear parts helps. Mark the places on the model where parts are to replace plastic ones and sand the plastic away carefully. If the package also contains masking elements, apply them only onto cured paint and remove them shortly after the last coat has dried.
The set is an accessory for a model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
