About product

P-47 national insignia 1942-1943, HGW wet transfers in 1:48 scale

In 1:48 scale the ratio between the size of the marking and the thickness of the carrier film is even more awkward than on large models. A national insignia takes up only a couple of centimeters, but the film around it is as thick as on a large sheet, and on a matte surface it therefore announces itself with a glossy frame. A wet transfer removes that problem by another route. The marking is applied like a decal, but once it has dried the carrier film is taken off and only the color layer itself is left on the model. You will not see an edge anywhere and the surface under the insignia keeps its texture.

Which subject the set belongs to

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt was an American single-seat fighter with a radial engine and a turbocharger placed in the rear fuselage. It entered combat in 1943, first as an escort fighter for bomber formations and later more and more often in the role of a fighter-bomber. The markings of 1942 and 1943 are a trap for a modeler, because they changed several times in that short period. The star in a blue circle lost its red center, later white side bars were added and with them a red surround for a few months, which was succeeded by blue. Anyone building a machine from a particular month needs the matching variant.

Application tips

Work on a glossy and perfectly smooth surface. In the smaller scale the insignia are finer, so cut them out with a minimal overlap and move them with soft-jawed tweezers. After wetting, let the transfer stand for a while so that the film releases by itself, as forcing a small marking along easily twists it. Press the water out from under the insignia with a soft brush from the center toward the edges. Take the carrier film off only once it is completely dry, ideally the next day, otherwise the thin layer will tear. Then even the model out with a matte varnish.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Thunderbolt in 1:48, the most widespread aircraft scale.
  • Modelers who want period-correct insignia from the first period of service.
  • Those who are bothered by the glossy outlines of classic decals on matte paint.
  • Builders who go on to weather and wear the markings together with the paint.

This is not a kit. The set is an accessory to a model that you obtain separately, along with glue, paints and varnishes.

FAQ

Only once it is completely dry, the next day if you like. In the smaller scale the color layer is thin and tears easily while damp.

A wet transfer behaves differently from a decal and aggressive softeners do it no good. What matters is a smooth glossy surface and patiently drawing the water out from under the marking.

No. This is only a set of markings. The kit in 1:48 scale, the paints and the varnishes are bought separately.

The American national insignia went through several changes in that period. The set is aimed at the form from those years, so that the markings match the time you are setting the model in.
