A set of precisely cut self-adhesive masks from the Czech maker Eduard for a model of the Panavia Tornado ASSTA 3.1 in 1:48 scale. The masks are cut from kabuki tape, that is, from a fine Japanese masking tape that holds well even on slightly curved surfaces, forms no capillary for paint to run under the edge and leaves no adhesive on the clear parts once it is taken off. This is neither a kit nor a finished model but an accessory that shortens the most tiresome part of the build.
The Panavia Tornado is a twin-engined combat aircraft with a variable-geometry wing and a two-seat cockpit with the seats one behind the other. It came about through the cooperation of makers from Germany, Great Britain and Italy. The designation ASSTA refers to a series of avionics upgrade standards for the German machines of the IDS version, and step 3.1 is among the later stages of the program. The upgrades concern mainly the equipment of the cockpit, the navigation and the integration of armament, while the outer shape of the airframe stays essentially unchanged.
The Tornado has large two-seat glazing with a conspicuous fixed frame in the middle. Carry the masks with tweezers and press them out from the middle toward the edges, so that no air stays under them. First spray the frames with the shade of the interior. The gray finishes of modern machines are low in contrast, so after taking the masks off check the edge against the light and put any overspray right with a thin brush. Degrease the glazing before varnishing, as grease from the fingers is the most common cause of a mask not holding.
