About product

1:48 Percival Proctor Mk.I - a set of glazing masks

Pre-cut masking templates for a model of the British Percival Proctor Mk.I aircraft in 1:48 scale from Eduard. It is not a kit nor parts of a model, but an accessory for painting. The masks are die-cut from thin kabuki paper, hold their shape even on curves and can be removed after spraying with no adhesive residue. On an aircraft with a glazed cockpit divided into many small panels a ready-made set of masks is practically irreplaceable; cutting that number of shapes by hand is lengthy and never comes out exactly the same.

The real subject

The Percival Proctor was a British single-engine low-wing aircraft of mixed construction, derived from a prewar civil touring aircraft. During the Second World War it served mainly as a liaison machine and as a flying classroom for training radio operators with the Royal Air Force and the Fleet Air Arm. The cabin is glazed along the whole length of the crew area and divided by a row of frames, because the machine came about as a comfortable touring aircraft with good visibility. It is exactly this division that makes masking one of the most time-consuming parts of the build.

Usage tips

With many small panels it pays to work systematically, one side of the cabin after the other, and to check the finished panels against the light at once. Lift the mask off the sheet with a pointed scalpel, not with your fingers, and place it with tweezers. The frames on a model tend to be shallow, so align the mask to the engraved edge rather than by eye. Spray the interior shade first, so that the frame is not white from inside, and only then the shade of the upper finish. Leave the finished glazing masked for as long as possible and remove the masks only after clear coating.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building the Percival Proctor in 1:48 scale
  • Those daunted by a large number of small cockpit frames
  • Builders of British aircraft of the Second World War period
  • Anyone who wants clean windows and sharp frames with no cutting by hand

It is not a model of an aircraft, but an accessory for one. The base kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

Masking templates die-cut from kabuki paper. The model, paints and glue are not included.

With a cabin divided into many small panels, cutting by hand takes hours and the width of the frames comes out uneven. Ready-made masks have every shape accurate and identical.

Ideally only after the last clear coat, that is, at the very end of the painting. Until then they also protect the glazing from scratches.
