A self-adhesive masking set for the cockpit of the Italian Reggiane Re.2002 Ariete fighter-bomber in 1:48 scale. The shapes are cut for the kit by Italeri and cover the glass from both sides.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Ariete, that is ram, grew out of the family of light fighters that Roberto Longhi designed for the works in Reggio Emilia. Compared with its predecessors it received a Piaggio radial engine and a strengthened structure for carrying bombs, which turned it into an attack machine. It got into the air at the end of 1940 and something over two hundred were built. Its hardest commitment came in the summer of 1943, when Italian squadrons attacked the Allied landings off the Sicilian coast. After the September armistice some of the aircraft were taken over by the Germans and used over occupied France against resistance groups. No surviving example in original condition is to be found today, so a model is the only way to build an Ariete.
On this type the cockpit frame is formed by several wide braces and a fixed rear section, so masking by hand is unpleasantly slow. The pre-formed shapes in this set match the outlines of a particular model and are laid straight where they belong. You get them in two forms, for the view from outside and for the inner side of the glass.
First rid the clear part of grease, then transfer the individual shapes with tweezers and press them down with a fingernail or a wooden stick over their whole area. Apply the camouflage in several light passes. Once the paint is touch-dry, lift a corner of the film with a point and pull it away smoothly to the side, not straight up.
The model itself is not included. This is a separate accessory meant to be bought along with a kit.
