1:48 Rusian missile R-24 R Apex

The R-24R Apex missile 1:48 — a Plusmodel resin accessory

A resin miniature of the Soviet R-24R air-to-air guided missile (AA-7 Apex in the NATO reporting system) in 1:48 scale from the production of the Czech manufacturer Plusmodel. It is not a model of an aircraft but an accessory of armament, a casting of the missile with which you complete the stores of your model or enrich an airfield diorama with munitions ready to be loaded.

The real subject

The R-24 was a Soviet medium-range air-to-air guided missile developed as an improvement of the older R-23 for the modernized MiG-23ML and MLD fighters. The R-24R version carried a semi-active radar seeker head, so it was able to destroy targets beyond visual range and in difficult weather conditions. In practice it was usually carried paired with the infrared R-24T version so that the pilot could choose the method of homing according to the situation. Missiles of this series were carried by Czechoslovak MiG-23ML aircraft as well.

Building and painting tips

First wash the resin parts in warm soapy water so that the remains of the mold release agent are removed. Cut the casting blocks off with a modeling saw and sand the mark down; use protection for your airways while sanding. Glue the parts with cyanoacrylate glue and apply a dark base coat before painting. The body of the missile tends to be light gray or white on the real subject, and prominent bands and the tips of the seeker head will beautifully liven the detail of the store up.
