About product

Saab A-32A Lansen Gamma 1:48 - a conversion set from Maestro Models

This resin set in 1:48 scale serves to convert a model of the Swedish Saab A-32A Lansen into the form designated Gamma, that is, into the configuration with a front section matching the equipment of the Saab 37 Viggen. It is not an aircraft kit - the base Lansen model has to be on hand, and the set replaces its original front parts. Maestro Models is a Swedish accessory brand, and exactly these domestic test machines are among the subjects you will not find with the large kit makers.

The real subject

The Saab 32 Lansen was a Swedish two-seat jet aircraft of the 1950s with a swept wing, built in attack, fighter and reconnaissance versions; the A-32A was the attack version. A sturdy airframe and a roomy nose made it a suitable carrier for measuring and test apparatus, so the Lansen served in test roles long after it had been replaced in combat units. One such use was the flight testing of equipment for the forthcoming Saab 37 Viggen, when the machine received a modified nose. The set captures this configuration.

Building and painting tips

Converting the front section means cutting into the fuselage. Mark the line of the cut with thin tape all the way round, so that the cut is square, and use a saw, not a knife. Wash the resin parts in lukewarm water with dish soap, remove the casting blocks and level the surfaces on sandpaper on a flat base. They are attached with cyanoacrylate glue, and once it has dried, fill and sand the joint - the transition between resin and plastic shows most of all on the outline of the nose when the model is looked at. Watch the balance: a resin nose is heavier than hollow plastic. Apply primer before painting; it will also show whether the joint really is smooth.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of Swedish aircraft in 1:48 scale
  • Those interested in Cold War test and measurement aircraft
  • Modelers with experience of cutting a fuselage and of resin conversions
  • Those who want to turn an ordinary Lansen kit into an unusual machine

This is a conversion accessory, not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a configuration of the Lansen modified for flight testing, when the machine received a front section matching the equipment of the Saab 37 Viggen. The set models exactly this form.

It is not. The set is a conversion accessory; get the base plastic Saab 32 Lansen kit in 1:48 scale separately.

It calls for a square cut of the fuselage, gluing with cyanoacrylate and filling the joint. For a modeler who has already done a resin conversion it is manageable; we would not recommend it as a first conversion.

A resin nose is heavier than hollow plastic, so the center of gravity moves forward. Try the balance dry before closing the fuselage up.
