About product

Photo-etched fenders for the Marder III in 1:48 scale

This set from the Czech maker Hauler holds photo-etched fenders for the model of the German Sd.Kfz. 139 Marder III tank destroyer. It is an aftermarket accessory for a plastic kit, which the modeler buys separately. The package holds nothing from which a vehicle could be built; these are purely replacement parts. The target kit is Tamiya.

Why the fenders in particular

On models of armored vehicles the fenders are among the parts where a plastic mold loses most. On the real vehicle it is sheet a few millimeters thick, which in 1:48 scale works out at tenths of a millimeter. Because of the production process a plastic casting is many times thicker, and at the edge that can be told even with the naked eye. The second advantage of metal is that it can be shaped. On vehicles in service the fenders were often bent, knocked off or missing, and photo-etch can be bent, torn or shortened without effort, which with plastic ends in a crack.

Building and painting tips

Cut the original plastic fenders off as close to the hull as possible and sand the area, so that the new part sits down with no gap. Make the bends and the damage before gluing, on a hard surface and with a round tool, the handle of a scalpel for instance. Keep the deformations restrained; a fender buckled all over looks artificial. Glue with super glue in short sections, so that the part can be straightened as you go. Once degreased, use a primer for metal and only then the base color. It is useful to fill the undersides of the fenders with textured paste or with pigment and a binder, so that a build-up of dried mud appears, which also visually covers the glued joint.

Who the set is for

  • builders of German Second World War vehicles in 1:48 scale
  • modelers who are bothered by the thickness of plastic fenders
  • diorama builds that allow for damage and weathering
  • more experienced builders willing to cut the original part off

This is an accessory set, not a kit of the vehicle. The Tamiya base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes, with replacement photo-etched fenders the original part is cut off and the area sanded, so that the metal sits down with no gap.

Make the bends and tears before gluing, on a hard surface. Keep them restrained and asymmetrical; one bent corner or a missing piece looks more faithful than a fender buckled along its whole length.

It does, provided you degrease the part and go over it with a primer for metal. Without a primer the paint comes away from smooth sheet during handling.

It is not. These are replacement parts for a model that you buy separately.

For the Tamiya kit in 1:48 scale. The base kit is not included in the package.
