About product

Sopwith Camel - Smer plastic kit, 1:48 scale

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British fighter biplane Sopwith Camel in 1:48 scale from the Czech brand Smer. It is a classic kit of an older cut with a manageable number of parts; as with biplanes, the build includes the bracing wires, that is tensioning the bracing lines between the wings and the fuselage. The exact contents of the box and the decal schemes are given in the instructions in the box.

The real subject

The Sopwith Camel was one of the most successful British fighter aircraft of the First World War and is credited with more victories than any other Allied fighter of its day. It got the nickname Camel from the fairing over the two machine guns, which formed a characteristic hump on the fuselage. It was very agile but also treacherous to fly: the concentration of the weight of the engine, the guns and the pilot in the front part of the fuselage, together with the torque reaction of the rotary engine, made it a machine that could turn in a flash but could easily put an inexperienced pilot into a spin. In the hands of experienced pilots it was a feared weapon that helped the Allies gain air superiority at the end of the war.

Building and painting tips

With an older tooling, count on more careful cleaning of the flash from the parts and on a trial dry fit. Finish and paint the cockpit before closing the fuselage, seat the lower wing first and the upper one only into the struts with a temporary support. Tension the bracing wires after the main painting with a fine thread or an elastic filament. Bring the covering to life with fine shading and a wash, and bring out the gun fairing and the cylinders of the rotary engine with metal shades and dry-brushing.

Who the model is for

  • For fans of the legendary Sopwith Camel and of the flying aces of the Great War.

  • For beginners as well as those who remember classic kits of an older cut.
