A photo-etched set aimed at the external tools of Soviet vehicles in 1:48 scale. It is not a model or a kit: the parts are glued onto a model already under way and replace items that injection-molded plastic molds only roughly. It is precisely tools bolted to a hull or a fender that are the detail a viewer picks up before the shape of the turret - and the plastic version gives itself away by the thickness of its mountings.
External tools belonged to the compulsory equipment of practically every Soviet vehicle: without a shovel, a crowbar and a saw a machine could not manage in the field. The tools were secured with straps and clamps of thin sheet, which could be released quickly. The thickness of such a strap corresponds in 1:48 scale to a fraction of a millimeter - plastic can never reach it for technological reasons, whereas photo-etched metal can. The result is a mounting with shadow visible under it, and not a merged lump of plastic.
It pays to plan the order of work: the tools are usually glued on after the base coat on the hull, so that they can be painted separately. Wooden handles get an ocher base, a brown wash and a light dry brush, the metal parts a dark steel paint with a fine sheen added on the edges. Bend the straps and clamps along the etched lines, ideally in a photo-etch bender. Degrease the metal with alcohol before painting and go over it with primer. Lay the small parts out on a piece of double-sided tape, or they will fly off the tweezers around the workshop.
