About product

Spitfire Mk.I - control surfaces 1:48 from CMK

A set of resin control surfaces for the Supermarine Spitfire fighter in the Mk.I version in 1:48 scale. It is an accessory for the Airfix kit, not a model of the aircraft. It serves to swap the surfaces that in plastic are cast in one piece with the wing or the tail surfaces for separate parts that can be fitted deflected.

Why replace the control surfaces

The rudder and ailerons of early Spitfires were covered with fabric, so the typical sag appears between the ribs. In injected plastic this structure is either suppressed or, on the contrary, overdone. A casting keeps it finer and above all makes it possible to fit the surfaces in a position other than neutral; a model with a slightly deflected rudder and a dropped aileron comes across as livelier at once, especially on a stand beside a figure or in a diorama.

Cutting, wet sanding and painting

The most delicate operation is separating a surface from the casting block, as a thin part with a leading edge breaks easily. Support it on a board across its whole area while cutting, therefore, and guide the saw with short strokes rather than by force. Sand strictly wet: lay the abrasive paper on glass, wet it and guide the part across it; that way you get a straight edge and at the same time create no dust. Dry resin dust must not be inhaled, and after work wipe the surface with a damp cloth. You modify the wing or the fin itself by cutting off the original surface; always scribe the cut first and only then cut. Try the parts dry and hold them with tweezers until the cyanoacrylate glue sets. Painting is simplest done separately: stick the surfaces with double-sided tape to a strip of card, spray them, and fit them to the model only once dry.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Spitfire Mk.I in 1:48 scale
  • Modelers who want to fit the surfaces deflected
  • More experienced builders who do not mind cutting into a finished wing
  • Modelers building a scene with an aircraft in motion or after landing

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and other accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Before buying, check that the set will fit your kit.

FAQ

Yes. The original surfaces cast in one piece with the wing or the tail have to be cut off and replaced with the castings.

The number of parts is stated on the box of the set.

Yes, the surfaces can be fitted straight. The main advantage, though, is the possibility of deflection, which a one-piece plastic wing does not allow.

While cutting, support the part across its whole area, guide the saw with short strokes and sand the remainder of the block down wet on abrasive paper laid on glass.
