Masking shapes with decals for the Spitfire Mk Vb in 1:48 scale. The cut covers the outer framing of the canopy and one version of the national marking.
Responsibility details are not available.
No other variant of the Spitfire was built in such numbers as the Mark V. It actually came about as a stopgap, by combining the airframe of the Mark II with a stronger Merlin of the 40 series, only it turned out that this was enough for a whole year of fighting. The version with the letter b carried a pair of 20 mm Hispano cannons and four machine guns in the wing, which was the first really effective armament of this machine. Squadrons over the Channel, on Malta and in North Africa were equipped with it.
The set offers shapes only for the view from outside. For the modeler that means shorter preparation: the degreased glass is masked, sprayed and done, no second round with the inner framing. On a small single-seat canopy that is a practical solution and the result is indistinguishable at the usual viewing distance in a display case.
The Hispano cannons fitted into the thin wing only with difficulty and the ammunition drums had to get bulged covers of their own on the upper and the lower surface. It is those bulges that make the Mark V an easily recognizable variant and it is worth not overlooking them during the build, because they differ by production batch as well.
