The Mark V version came about by combining the older airframe with the more powerful Merlin 45 engine and was built in greater numbers than any other version of the type. The letter b after the numeral denotes the layout of the armament: two 20 mm Hispano cannons and four machine guns to go with them, that is a compromise between penetration and ammunition supply. Many machines got a bulky filter under the nose for sandy areas and some of them clipped wingtips for a quicker response to the controls at low altitude. The Mark Vs flew over Malta, over North Africa and in Australia.
In the Far East theater it turned out that the red center of the British circle looked dangerously like the Japanese marking from a distance. One of the most interesting interventions in Allied marking of all followed: red was left out of the roundel and a pair of blue shades replaced it, a dark outer circle and a lighter center. The Royal Australian Air Force went the same way. The result is that the same type of aircraft carries a different set of markings in Europe than over Burma, even though the year of production is practically the same. Anyone building a Mark V in an eastern camouflage has to adjust the marking, otherwise the model does not match.
The glazing is masked from the outer side; there are no inner masks here. The insignia are produced by spraying through the sheet and are complemented by the enclosed decals. The film is flexible and gives even on a markedly blown canopy without wrinkling at the corners. Before applying it, polish the canopy and rid it of dust.
