New Ware 1:48 SR-71 basic — a masking set for the glazing

A set of self-adhesive masking templates in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit and it is not a template for spraying camouflage either — the masks are cut into the shape of the canopy frames and the rest of the glazing, so the lengthy sticking and trimming of tape straight on the model falls away. The designation basic marks out the basic extent of the set; the maker also offers a more extensive variant for the same aircraft. The masks are cut to the shape of a particular kit, so verify before buying that you own the matching model. The masks are cut for the Italeri and Testors kits.

How to use the masks

• Degrease the glazing before masking and let it dry completely.
• Carry the masks over with tweezers or the tip of a scalpel; fingers leave grease on the sticky side.
• Press the edges down with a toothpick once they are stuck; that is exactly where paint creeps under.
• Spray in thin coats; a heavy coat makes a step on the edge that peels when the mask is taken off.
• Take the masks off soon after the paint has dried, not after weeks; the adhesive hardens with time.
• The frames can be sprayed with an interior shade first; the view from inside the cockpit then fits.
