The basic grade of a masking set in 1:48 scale from New Ware. It is neither a kit nor a model of the aircraft but an accessory for painting. The templates are cut from Japanese kabuki paper, that is, from thin washi paper with a gentle adhesive, and they are applied to the areas that are to stay clean after spraying. The BASIC grade is the smallest of those offered in the New Ware range, with ADVANCED and EXPERT above it covering a greater extent of masking.
The Su-33 is a carrier fighter derived from the Su-27. For operation from a ship's deck it received folding wings and folding horizontal tail surfaces, canard foreplanes, a strengthened landing gear and an arrestor hook. It has a characteristic long forward fuselage with a large cockpit canopy and a pair of engines separated by a flat center fuselage. The designation Flanker-D comes from the NATO code system. The large cockpit glazing and its framing are among the most laborious places when painting this type, which is the main reason modelers reach for a masking set.
Degrease the areas before applying the masks and let them dry. Lift the masks with tweezers, seat them in place and press the edge down with a toothpick or a stick, so that paint does not run underneath. Apply several thin coats; on sharp transitions it helps to spray the edge with the base color first, which will close off any penetration. Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried.
This is an accessory for painting, not a kit. Paints, glue and the model are not included in the package. Check before you buy that the set matches the kit you want to use it on.
