The Supermarine Spitfire IX on a decal sheet in 1:48, three machines of the years 1943 to 1944 including a wing leader's aircraft.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Spitfire Mk.IX came about as a quick answer to the German Fw 190, against which the older fives were losing out. A two-stage supercharged Merlin was built into the airframe of the fifth version and the result was a fighter that matched its German rival in altitude as well as in climb. The LF.IX version then got an engine tuned for lower levels, where most of the fighting over the continent after 1943 took place.
Two variants carry the personal code SZ-G and belong to the Polish Wing Commander Aleksander Gabszewicz. The older of them is an F.IX from the Northolt base in the summer of 1943, the younger an LF.IX of 1944. The third machine with the code UF-Q served with No. 601 Squadron, known by the title County of London, and is captured in Italy in the summer of 1944. Besides the fighters themselves, masks for the canopy and the wings are available as a separate accessory.
The personal codes of wing leaders differed from the usual squadron markings and tended to be placed differently, so it pays to check the position against a photograph. Before applying them make sure the surface is perfectly smooth, and once finished let the model rest at least one day before you set about the weathering.
