An accessory set from the Czech maker Hauler, not a kit of the vehicle. It is meant for detailing the engine section of models of the T-34 and of the SU-122 self-propelled gun in 1:48 scale. An open engine compartment is one of the most rewarding ways of giving a model depth - the viewer looks inside the machine, not just at its outer shape, and the finished work stands out even without an extensive diorama.
The T-34 was powered by a twelve-cylinder diesel, housed in the rear of the hull together with the radiators and the air filters. The SU-122 self-propelled gun, which was built on the T-34 chassis and carried a howitzer in a fixed superstructure instead of a rotating turret, took over the same engine and the same rear layout. Thanks to the shared chassis one set is therefore usable for both subjects.
The work begins with cutting the rear deck out of the kit and leveling the opening - prepare this modification before you start gluing the hull together. Paint the engine compartment separately and fit the finished assembly last, or you will not reach into it with a brush. Building up in layers works well: first the base color, then a dark wash into the shadows between the units, finally drybrushing on the edges and oily stains exactly where they would arise in service. Watch the contrast - an open engine compartment tends to be darker and dirtier than the outside of the machine, and it is precisely that difference that makes the result believable.
This is an accessory for building a model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.
