About product

T17E1 Staghound Mk.I 1:48 - a Hauler photo-etched set

The package holds photo-etched metal parts for refining the plastic kit of the Staghound Mk.I armored car in 1:48 scale. The product is not a kit of the vehicle - it is an aftermarket set from the Czech maker Hauler, cut for the Bronco kit, which has to be obtained separately. Unlike the antiaircraft version, this one is the classic gun-armed Staghound with a closed turret.

The real subject

The Staghound Mk.I was a heavier all-wheel-drive armored car, produced in the USA and committed predominantly by British and Commonwealth units. It carried a rotating turret with a gun and supplementary machine-gun armament and was used for reconnaissance, for patrolling and for securing an advance. Its characteristic features are the large fenders, the equipment fastened to the hull and a quantity of small grab handles - exactly the elements that injection-molded plastic manages only approximately.

Building and painting tips

Never break photo-etched parts out with your fingers. Lay the fret on a hard smooth surface, glass or a piece of hard plastic for instance, and cut the fret tab through with vertical pressure from a sharp blade. Put the cut-out parts away in a dish, or they will be lost beyond recovery. Where photo-etch replaces a plastic part, sand the original element away first and level the area, so that the new part sits down without a gap. At the end comes degreasing, a primer for metal and only then the paint. Fine grab handles and loops stand out once they have been brought up with a dark wash.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of Allied armored equipment in 1:48 scale.
  • Those who want to get the maximum of detail out of the Staghound kit.
  • Builders of dioramas where the model is looked at close up.
  • Modelers with basic experience of photo-etch and super glue.

This is an accessory set, not a model. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Yes. This one is meant for the gun-armed Mk.I version with a closed turret; the antiaircraft T17E2 variant has a separate set of its own.

It is not. These are photo-etched metal parts only; the plastic kit has to be bought separately.

With a sharp scalpel, vertical pressure and a hard surface, or with shears for photo-etch. Breaking them out deforms the part.

Where the photo-etch replaces a plastic element, yes - sand the original part away and level the area, so that the metal sits down flat.
