This is a sheet of waterslide decals from HGW that transfers a fine dark wood structure onto a model in 1:48 scale. The decals are transparent, so the final shade of the wood is set by the base color they are applied over. The version without a grid carries a continuous wood grain with no dividing panel lines, which makes it suitable for larger uninterrupted surfaces.
Imitation wood is used on propellers, wooden parts of cockpits, floors, instrument panels or the fuselage surfaces of aircraft of wooden construction. Because it is transferred by a thin decal film, the surface looks more realistic than hand painting and it saves time.
First spray the base color (white, cream or yellow): its shade tunes the final tone of the wood and lets you tell the individual parts apart. Cut out the shape you need with a small margin and apply the decal in the usual way with a decal fixative and a decal softener so that it settles into the details as well. Once dry, it is worth overcoating to unify the sheen and protect the surface.
