This kit in 1:48 scale captures the Yakovlev Yak-9 fighter in the version designated TD. The manufacturer is the Ukrainian brand Modelsvit, which has long devoted itself to Soviet types and their less usual variants.
The Yak-9 was a single-engine low-wing fighter of mixed construction with a liquid-cooled V12 engine, built in many specialized versions. The letter T belonged to the variant with a large-caliber cannon mounted on the axis of the engine and firing through the propeller hub, which called for the pilot's station to be moved back. The letter D on machines of this family refers to an increased fuel load for longer flight times. The TD version therefore combines the heavy gun armament with the larger fuel volume.
Kits from this manufacturer tend to have fine engraved detail but call for accurate work: test the parts dry, clean up the parting lines and glue the joints of the fuselage with the wing in sections, so that the dihedral sits right. The cockpit interior is clearly visible on this type and it pays to weather it before the fuselage is closed up. The surface is of mixed construction - wooden and metal areas reflect light differently, which can be suggested by a different degree of sheen in the final coat. Apply the decals onto a gloss surface, even it out with a matte coat once they are dry and keep the weathering within reason.
