What the set is for

The set brings railing elements for models of American ships in 1:700 scale. On real vessels railing runs around the open decks, the bridge wings and the walkways, and it is one of the first things on a model that shows how carefully it was built. The correct form of the name is U.S. Ships Utility Rail.

Why railing pays off in a small scale

In 1:700 scale even large ships are only a few tens of centimeters long, so attention goes to the outline of the superstructure and to the edges of the decks. Fine railing gives the silhouette depth and the model stops coming across as a solid mass. At the same time it is a feature a viewer unconsciously ties to scale, so it helps the sense of size as well.

Work tips

• The parts are tiny, so work with tweezers over a light surface, so that a lost piece can be found.
• Part the individual sections with a sharp blade and level the cut face carefully afterwards.

• Glue it spot by spot with cyanoacrylate, applied with the tip of a wire rather than straight from the bottle.
• Apply the paint in a thin coat; a heavy coat floods the fine elements.
