About product

The 8-inch howitzer Mk VII with a crew, 1:72 scale, Strelets-R

This item belongs to the artillery line of the manufacturer Strelets-R and joins two things: a model of a heavy howitzer and figures of its crew from the period of the First World War. It is not a standalone kit of a vehicle nor a standalone set of figures, but a complete package intended for building one artillery position. The gun is assembled from several parts and the crew figures are in poses corresponding to work at the weapon. The material is soft plastic, the scale 1:72; everything is supplied unpainted.

The real subject

The 8-inch howitzer of British design designated Mk VII was among the heavy artillery pieces of the First World War, used for fire against fortified targets at long range. Besides British units, American units committed in Europe were armed with it as well, which this set corresponds to. Structurally it is a weapon with a long lower carriage, massive wheels and a recoil mechanism, that is, an object that works in a diorama as a prominent focal point.

Building and painting tips

Glue the gun with cyanoacrylate or with two-part epoxy, as ordinary cement for polystyrene does not hold reliably on this material. Before gluing, check whether the wheels sit at right angles and whether the carriage stands without rocking; any deviations are corrected by heating the part in hot water. Deburr and wash all the parts in lukewarm water with detergent before painting, then apply a base primer. The metal surfaces of the barrel and the carriage are brought to life by a dark glaze flowed into the detail and fine accenting of the edges with a dry brush, as excessive metallic sheen looks unnatural in this scale. Finish the position by sinking the wheels into the terrain, with tracks where they have sunk in and by dusting the lower parts of the gun and the crew's footwear with a pigment in the color of the soil.

Who the set is for

  • builders of dioramas from the period of the First World War in 1:72 scale
  • modelers with an interest in artillery and its crews
  • collectors who are adding American units of this era
  • players of tabletop war games in a small scale

The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and terrain material are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Both. The package joins a model of the howitzer with figures of its crew, so from it you will build a whole artillery position.

The gun is assembled from several parts and the crew figures are separate.

With cyanoacrylate or with two-part epoxy. Ordinary cement for polystyrene will not join soft plastic of this kind reliably.

Avoid a pronounced metallic sheen. Better is a darker base tone, a glaze flowed into the detail and very fine dry brushing of the edges.
