Armored trains joined armor with the railway. They guarded lines, bridges and stations, escorted transports and supported infantry with their fire; where hardened roads were lacking, they could move heavy armament and supplies quickly along the rails. A train was usually built around an armored locomotive, fighting cars with gun and machine gun armament, and flatcars placed at the ends, which carried materiel and at the same time protected the train against a planted charge. They were used from the First World War right into the nineteen forties.
The 1:72 scale is a rewarding one for railway subjects. A train still fits on a shelf and at the same time stays large enough for the riveted strips, hatches, barrels and small equipment to stand out. The model sets well into a scene with a short section of track, a ramp or a station building, where it first becomes clear how long and unwieldy such cars were.
Join the large flat parts, that is the sides of the cars and the roofs, dry first and check whether the edges line up; only then glue, and fill and sand any gaps. Wash and degrease the model before painting. Apply the base shade in thin coats so that the texture of the surface stays apparent. Restrained weathering suits a train: a dark wash into the riveted seams and the hatches, a hint of rust on the edges, dust and coal grime on the running gear and the undersides of the cars, and lighter dried-out wood where a car has a plank floor.
The set is for modelers who enjoy military vehicles outside the usual tanks and guns, and for builders of railway scenes in 1:72 scale. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
