A plaster model of the French field blockhouse of the STG 1 type of 1939, an accessory for a diorama in 1:72 scale from the surroundings of the Maginot Line.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Maginot Line has stayed in memory mainly for its huge underground forts, but the gaps between them were filled by a dense network of small concrete works. Among them are the blockhouses designed by the engineering technical section of the French army, marked with the abbreviation STG. Depending on the type they had one to six embrasures and the crew manned them with a light or a heavy machine gun.
The subject of this casting is one particular work: it stood between the armored casemates of the Laudrefang wood, that is to the north and to the south of the wood of the same name, to the southeast of the fort in the same area. It was a position of field fortification inserted into the fortress system just before the outbreak of war in 1939.
In shape the work distantly resembles the Czechoslovak light works of the vz. 36 pattern, which anyone building a comparative display of prewar European fortification will appreciate. The casting is done in plaster, is supplied in one piece and suits models in the common small scale for ground vehicles and infantry.
Before painting, clear the casting of dust and seal it with a thin acrylic coat so that the plaster stops absorbing. Then build the concrete shade up with glazes from a lighter tone to a darker one and bring the edges out with drybrushing.
