About product

Bristol 170 Freighter Mk.31 1:72 — kit from FLY

A model of the British twin-engined Bristol 170 Freighter cargo aircraft in the Mk.31 version, in 1:72 scale. It is a large high-wing monoplane that makes a prominent item in a display case at this scale. The kit from FLY has the character of short-run production — the parts tend to be thicker, with fine surface engraving and higher demands on preparing the surfaces. The particular contents of the package are stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.

The real subject

The Bristol 170 Freighter was a postwar transport aircraft designed so that a car would fit into the fuselage. Clamshell cargo doors in the nose, a high-mounted wing and fixed landing gear are characteristic of it, that is solutions that put easy loading ahead of aerodynamic cleanliness. The machines served with transport companies and with military operators, among other things on short ferry routes across the sea. The Mk.31 version is one of the later forms of the series and differs in details of the airframe and the tail surfaces.

Building and painting tips

A large high-wing aircraft needs firm joints: before you close the fuselage, check that the internal bulkheads will give the correct width, and when gluing the wing check the dihedral against a template. With short-run parts try the fit dry and level the mating surfaces on abrasive paper laid on a flat board. The glazing of the cockpit and the nose section is extensive on this type — cut the masks in advance and glue the clear parts with a cement meant for transparent parts, as ordinary cement will fog them. The model has large uninterrupted surfaces that will reveal every irregularity, so a primer and sanding between coats pay off. Natural metal surfaces and simple airline schemes call for a smooth undercoat; gloss clear coat under the decals is practically a necessity here.

Who the model is for

  • Anyone interested in postwar British transport aircraft.
  • Builders looking for a large and unusual model in 1:72 scale.
  • More experienced modelers used to short-run kits.
  • Modelers who enjoy working with extensive glazing and masking.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is a twin-engined transport aircraft in 1:72 scale, so reckon with a large display item with a wide span.

Rather not. Short-run production calls for trying the fit dry, filling and sanding large surfaces.

Prepare the masks in advance and glue the clear parts with a cement meant for transparent parts. Ordinary cement for plastic will fog the glazing.

The exact contents, the number of parts and the number of marking options are stated on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.
