About product

1:72 BT-6 experimental light tank kit (UM)

An injection-molded plastic kit in 1:72 scale from UM. According to the name it captures an experimental light tank designated BT-6, that is, a machine from the circle of Soviet BT series fast wheel-cum-track tanks. It is a subject that appears in the usual kit range only rarely, and that is exactly what makes it interesting. The history of the particular machine and the contents of the package are outlined by the text and the illustration on the packaging.

The real subject

Soviet BT series fast tanks were built on a Christie-type suspension: large road wheels, springing inside the hull and the ability to run with or without tracks. Around this basic concept a whole group of test machines came into being in the 1930s, trying out different armament, a different turret arrangement or a different power plant. Most of them stayed at the prototype stage and never reached mass production, so they survive mainly in period photographs and technical documentation. The specific shape, armament and fate of the machine designated BT-6 are outlined by the text and the illustration on the packaging.

Building and painting tips

Test machines tend to have few visual references, so it pays to build the model the way the manufacturer designed it and not to add details taken from other versions of the series. Dry-fit the parts first and only then glue them; with the small parts of a small scale it is easier to apply the cement to the joint with a brush than straight from the bottle. Line the road wheels up on a flat surface so that they sit in one plane. When painting, keep to a restrained approach: a uniform base shade, a gentle lightening of the upper surfaces, a thin wash in the recesses and only a hint of dust on the lower areas. A test machine usually makes little sense built as a worn veteran from the front.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of unusual and little-known armor subjects
  • Modelers building the development line of Soviet fast tanks
  • Small-scale builders interested in 1930s prototypes
  • More experienced modelers who do not mind a small amount of available reference

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the name it is a test machine, not a mass-produced tank. The specific technical differences and the fate of the machine are outlined by the illustration and the text on the packaging.

The number of parts and the marking schemes are described on the packaging.

Rather for a modeler who already has experience with small scales. The parts are tiny and there is little reference for test machines, so it is built mainly from the instructions.

No. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted; glue and paints are bought separately.
